SIXTEEN

Together, Cal and Tamara supported Dex on their shoulders and dragged him inside.

“I don’t understand what you mean, Cal.” Tamara huffed, out of breath from sustaining her part of Dex’s superior weight. She realized it was the first real contact she’d had with him since that night he almost…she still couldn’t finish the thought.

They lowered Dex to the couch. Tamara’s exhausted muscles gave out and the majority of Dex’s weight shifted to an unsuspecting Cal who lost his grip. Dex fell the last few feet, his head thudding heavily against the arm. Tamara cringed but reached down to scoop his feet up and lay them over the opposite arm.

“I don’t understand it either.” Cal folded Dex’s arms awkwardly over his stomach before perching on the edge of the couch next to Dex’s feet. Was he still trying to stay between Dex and Tamara? Was he afraid Dex would wake up swinging—or grasping? She couldn’t tell what the guardian’s motivation was, but when he asked her to hand him an afghan and held his hand out for it instead of reaching across the room to pluck it off the back of the chair, she knew he didn’t want to leave Dex’s side. “I recognized Murray though. Has he been here before?”

Tamara shook her head, feeling like an idiot for not understanding what Cal was saying. “Dex wasn’t himself, but...” Her eyes grew wide. “Oh! He really wasn’t!”

“No, he really wasn’t.” Cal crossed his arms and leaned back against the arm of the couch, pushing Dex’s long legs over to gain more room. He studied the sleeping man with a frown.

“Who is Murray?”

“Murray is one of the ghosts I knew in the void. He wasn’t there as long as I was, but…” Cal paused and curled a lip. “He was particularly nasty. I avoided him mostly.”

“I think he’s the one who…who…the night you showed up.” Tamara stared at her fingers, curled together in her lap.

“From what he said, it sounds like you are somehow his conduit.”

Tamara remembered Dex – or Murray, she supposed – saying something about getting a lot of energy while she and Dex were making love. Her face flushed with the memory, knowing Cal had heard it too and could probably guess what Murray meant by ‘whenever he’s over you’ or whatever he’d said.

“Um…” Cal continued. By his apologetic expression, Tamara suspected he was going to ask about the very same thought she’d just been having. “It sounds like it’s been a long time since he’s had a dose of your ghost touch though.”

Tamara’s blush could light the room.

“And Dex said you jump away if he so much as brushes past.” Cal cleared his throat. “I’m sorry to have to get so personal, Tamara, but I want to help Dex.”

She nodded without making eye contact.

“Have you touched him at all recently?”

She peeked up at Cal. Thankful the question wasn’t as personal as she expected. When she tried to talk, her voice cracked. She swallowed and tried again. “No, I haven’t been able to since that night.
